Some of the K.I.D.S. in a blanket fort discussionThe K.I.D.S. Has Some Work To Do
Deadline: March 6
Contact: Emcee C.M. – thekidsforever(at)gmail(dot)com (Subject: I am a K.I.D.)
Scheduled for May, 2009

The Kindness and Imagination Development Society (K.I.D.S.) is getting ready to do some work with the Flux Factory. Together we will carry out a series of temporary events and actions in parks, on quiet streets, on busy sidewalks, at workplaces, in private residences, in public libraries and museums, and anywhere else the K.I.D.S. can think of to play and work. The series will be characterized by an ethic of generosity, innovation, and open exchange with all we meet.

If you would like to take part, please write to us by March 6th. In your letter, imagine an activity or activities that encourage the (re)development of the sympathetic and creative faculties present in all of us. Also, please talk about your own interests and skills that you would like to bring to the project. You may also submit a drawing or photograph (.jpg under 1mb) to illustrate your ideas, if you like. The activities will be held daily over a period of one or two weeks throughout New York City, resulting in a concentrated period of engagement with our elusive childhood virtues: kindness and imagination. Ice cream and snacks will be provided.

The series of activities will be co-produced collaboratively by an open, changeable, and inclusive group of individuals hanging out together as the K.I.D.S. You, as the party suggesting an activity, must be prepared to pool your ideas and energies with the rest of the K.I.D.S. taking part in the process. Let’s be clear: we want to have a meaningful and authentic collaboration, in which all of us stand on equal footing.

All, regardless of background, are invited to participate in this project.

Flux Factory and Emcee C.M., Master of None are serving as facilitators:

About the Bronx Blanket Fort in Blanka’s Bedroom and the Balloon Connection

In Events, Past on February 1, 2009 at 10:40

We made a good-sized blanket fort in a bedroom on Archer Avenue in Mott Haven, Bronx. It was in Blanka’s room for a month. She puts on art shows and community events there. Check it out: The fort was a lovely place to sit and think and talk.

One day, we sent some balloons down onto the street, fishing for new friends. There was a little notecard attached to each one inviting people to come play in the blanket fort, and it said the address of Blanka’s place.

One mysterious K.I.D., who went by many names, picked up a balloon and came upstairs to check out the fort and play for a while. He walked up the stairs to the third floor in his roller blades.

Then he came back for the snack-a-thon/fort demolition party we had the following week and brought his friend.

We got a bunch of good food at the West African Market around the corner, including delicious pillow bread (appropriately named) and salted fish.

Ashley sent over this picture of her blanket fort in Texas. How cool is that? Let’s keep it going!
